What has G-Dragon been upto?

It has been a little over a year since G-Dragon came back to his public life after completing his mandatory military service. And though we haven’t gotten an actual (musical) comeback - solo or with Big Bang, since all the other members have also been discharged from the military now - he has been active within the entertainment industry. Here all of his major activities since his return from the military.

Releasing a sneaker collaboration with Nike

Just a month after his return from the military, Nike revealed a new limited edition of their Air Force sneakers in collaboration with G-Dragon. The 'Nike' x 'PEACEMINUSONE' 'AF1 Para-Noise' sneakers were reported to be sold out within the first ten minutes of their release. The sneakers were exclusively sold in Korea only and G-Dragon held a private fashion event with 800 fans showcasing a live art performance. A year later in November 2020, G-Dragon collaborated with Nike once again to bring ‘The Para-Noise 2.0’ sneakers and once again the sneakers sold out within minutes in all 43 countries they were being sold at.

Renewing contract with YG Entertainment

News about all four Big Bang members - G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang and Daesung - renewing their contracts with YG Entertainment in March last year left everyone shocked. At the time, YG Entertainment was submerged in multiple scandals - including former Big Bang member Seungri’s infamous Burning Sun scandal, multiple allegations against the founder and former CEO Yang Hyun Suk’s wrong doings, and former iKon member B.I’s drug allegations. So, a lot of fans were speculating that all Big Bang members will opt out of resigning with the company to avoid their names being attached and mixed into those scandals.

Vogue cover shoot

During October last year, we got to see three avatars of G-Dragon on the cover of Vogue Korea’s November issues. This was his first magazine cover in four years and he is seen rocking multiple pieces from Chanel on the covers to celebrate Virginie Viard being appointed as the new creative director of the fashion house. During his interview with Vogue, he talked about how he considers all the songs he wrote in his 20s as diary entries and why he likes styling Chanel pieces in general.

A fun fact you may not know is that G-Dragon and Vogue’s connections go way back. He was actually the first idol to grace the cover of Vogue (Korea) back in August 2013 and Big Bang was the first group to be on the cover of the magazine too.

Attending Chanel Fashion Shows

Famous for his style and fashion choices, G-Dragon has been an ambassador for Chanel for over five years now. So, it isn’t surprising to see him at events conducted by the fashion house. He attended his first fashion show in three years, Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture show at Grand Palais, Paris, back in January 2020. He was spotted wearing a powder blue tweed jacket with a bunch of brooches pinned upfront over an oversized shirt and navy blue pants, and a black crossbody Chanel bag at the event. Later, in October, G-Dragon also watched the live stream of the Chanel Spring-Summer 2021 Show and appeared on the brand’s Instagram stories to share his thoughts on the collection. He was seen wearing another Chanel tweed jacket, this time in black, over a striped top and jeans with statement red socks, loafers, a black beanie, and another crossbody Chanel bag for the occasion.

Working on his comeback album

Probably the most exciting news for VIPS that came out late last year was YG entertainment’s confirmation that G-Dragon is working on new music. Originally, Big Bang was supposed to make their highly anticipated comeback at the 2020 Coachella stage but unfortunately the festival got cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. Rumors about both G-Dragon and Big Bang as a group coming back sparked multiple times last year - most notable of which was when he posted a series of pictures of himself in what appeared to be a filming set with a clapperboard emoticon as caption on Instagram in July. But the only official confirmation of a possible future comeback came early November when a YG official replied to a report by ONSEN about G-Dragon preparing for a comeback with the statement, “It is true that G-Dragon is working on new music.” We haven’t gotten any updates about this since but we’re hoping we’ll hear news about this comeback soon!
