RM from BTS has donated 100 million won for two consecutive years to preserve and restore Korean cultural assets overseas.
On 15 September, the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Overseas Cultural Heritage Foundation announced that RM had recently donated 100 million won to the foundation for the preservation, restoration and utilization of cultural assets located overseas. RM is said to have donated the amount that will be used to promote the beauty of Korean painting to the world.
RM quietly donated 100 million won to the foundation in September last year. According to the foundation, the donations delivered by RM at the time were used to preserve and dispose of the Joseon Dynasty Hwarots in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
Hwarot is the royal ceremonial dress worn by the princes and princesses during the Joseon Dynasty. Currently, only about 40 pieces of Hwarot from the Joseon Dynasty remain around the world, including 30 in Korea and 10 overseas. It is estimated that the Hwarot, which RM contributed to the preservation and restoration of, was made in the early 20th century.
The 100 million won that RM donated this year will be used to create a catalog introducing Korean paintings. The foundation is planning to start producing a catalog of Korean paintings that are scattered in major museums and art galleries in each country after requesting selection of works through an expert in the field of painting and consulting with the collection agencies.
In 2020, RM received the 'Art Sponsor of the Year' award by lending the 'horse' of sculptor Jinkyu Kwon in his collection to the Seoul Museum of Art and donating 100 million won to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. He has shown his special affection for Korean art by participating in exhibition commentary in Korean and English before 'The Space Between: The Modernity of Korean Art' held at Lachma from 11 September.
In addition, RM, a representative art lover among celebrities, posted photos of visiting art galleries and galleries across the country through his SNS. The museum that RM went to is gaining popularity with visitors under the name of 'RM Tour', and RM is also called the 'big hand' who leads the Korean art and art world.
