Bigbang Comeback With An MV for Still Life

After going four whole years without music from one of the industry’s biggest acts, today, we finally get a new comeback from Kpop’s legendary group Bigbang!

Bigbang’s fans, VIPs, have been anticipating this comeback for months. First after all members of the group were discharged from the military and later in 2020 when it was announced that the group would be performing at the Coachella Music Festival that year. That was supposed to be the group’s first live performance of their comeback. Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic, the event got canceled and we didn’t hear about Bigbang’s comeback until very recently.

In early February this year, the group’s label YG Entertainment confirmed Bigbang’s comeback rumors and revealed that they would be coming back in a month. Then, mid-March we found out that the group had finished filming the music video for this comeback. Finally, on 20 March, YG Entertainment announced that the group would be coming back on 5 April. And finally today, on 5 April, we have the song.

The song, Still Life, subverses expectations of what one would expect Bigbang to comeback with - especially after a four year hiatus.

Most people think of the more experimental, hype and eccentric side music and videos like Fantastic Baby and Bang Bang Bang when they see or hear the word ‘Bigbang’. And if you were expecting something akin to that, you will be surprised to know that Still Life is anything but that.

Bigbang chose to come back with a slow, sentimental, ballad-esq song where they sing about passing through the four seasons and reminisce about the past. The song’s unconventional structure, however, is very much up Bigbang’s alley. You can not distinguish what is the verse, chorus or bridge as with most pop songs. Perhaps it doesn’t have one.

The beautiful music video compliments the song wonderfully. The overall color scheme of orange and yellow definitely matches with that of the polaroid teasers the group released leading upto the comeback. It also seems laden with meaning for fans to decipher.

We at Kpoppr liked both the song and the music video at first listen/watch and we suspect it’ll only grow on us as we listen more to it.
