SM Entertainment introduced three new male faces to fans. The three trainees have been revealed as SM Rookies through the SM Rookies Twitter account and SM’s official social media accounts.
On 2 July, the agency posted pictures of Eunseok, Seunghan, and Shohei.
The images seem to be a pictorial on WWD magazine as all of them boast the logo (WWD) in big bold letters. All three boys look stylish and confident flaunting designers - Celine by the looks of it - in the photos.
Fans were a little surprised by the fact that SM decided to introduce these trainees as SM Rookies since they haven’t done so since 2018. The last batch of SM Rookies to be announced were WayV/NCT’s YangYang, Hendery, and Xiaojun who debuted with WayV/NCT in 2019. The two other NCT members who have debuted since - Sungchan and Shotaro - and all four aespa members were revealed directly at debut.
Another question fans are asking is whether these trainees will debut with NCT or through a new SM group. There have been murmurs of some new NCT sub-units for some time now as the last NCT sub-unit to debut was WayV in 2019. The company itself has been talking about NCT Hollywood and NCT Japan/NCT Tokyo so it is possible that Eunseok, Seunghan, and Shohei will join one of these sub-units. Additionally, the members who debuted in 2020 - Sungchan and Shotaro - aren’t a part of any permanent NCT sub-unit so these five boys could debut as an entirely different sub-unit as well.
On the other hand, SM Entertainment hasn’t debuted a boy group since NCT in 2016. So, some fans feel it is about time the company stops adding members to NCT and debut a new boy group instead.
