Kpop groups being formed through survival shows is not a new thing. Some of the biggest Kpop groups from third and second gen were also formed through survival shows. Examples of these are Twice, Bigbang, 2AM and 2PM.
But Mnet’s infamous Produce series definitely made the concept of ‘temporary groups from survival shows’ a popular thing in the Kpop industry. After I.O.I, Wanna One, Iz*one and X1, we got a new wave of groups formed through survival shows that were all temporary. So these days whenever fans hear about a group formed through a survival show, they usually assume it’s temporary. While we can’t blame them for that, not all groups follow this norm.
Enhypen is a good example of a group that was formed through a survival show but is not temporary.
Yes you read that right. Enhypen is a permanent group.
Enhypen is a seven member ‘permanent’ boy group under BE:LIFT Lab, a label jointly created by Hybe Labels and CJ E&M Entertainment.
We first got introduced to the Enhypen members through the survival show I-land. The show aired from 26 June 2020 to 18 September 2020. BE:LIFT Lab, the judges of the show and the viewers selected Heesung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon and Niki as the finalists among the 23 male trainees who participated in the show. These seven members debuted as Enhypen on 30 November 2020 with Given-Taken.
Their debut was well received by fans and Enhypen has been pretty popular among Kpop fans since their debut. Their first comeback with Border: Carnival was also a hit. While critics praised the catchy title track Drunk-Dazed, fans loved the b-side track Fever. Fever also got viral on TikTok.
Every comeback from the group since has been pretty successful. Recently, the b-side from their first studio album, Dimension: Answer, Polaroid Love also got viral on TikTok because of a catchy and easy to follow choreography created by a fan that took off on the video sharing site.
